K9 donation

The Social Action Committee for Jersey Shore FCU, Northfield, N.J., presented a check for $500 to K9 Warriors Inc. to help with the cost of training K9s for Combat Veterans in its area. All credit union employees wear jeans on Fridays and that money funded this donation.

Grants for schools

In Tennessee, the Knoxville TVA Employees CU Foundation for Education awarded 2017-2018 SIMPLY SMART Educator Project Grants to 39 schools in the credit union’s service area. Grants totaled more than $55,000.

San Diego-based Mission FCU received the Association of California School Administrators’ Partners in Educational Excellence Award, an honor that recognizes exemplary school-community partnership programs and businesses that collaborate with administrators in support of education. Portland, Ore.-based Unitus Community CU opened a new branch in Multnomah Village. Located on Capitol Highway, it is the CU’s 10th branch serving members throughout Portland Metro, Salem and Southwest Washington.

MCU Corner opens

New York City-based Municipal CU partnered with Medgar Evers College in Brooklyn to open MCU Corner at Medgar Evers College, an interactive banking center designed to provide the school's 6,800-plus students with a convenient space to conduct banking transactions without employee assistance by using digital technologies.

Fire relief

Santa Rosa, Calif.-based Redwood CU and its RCU Community Fund provided nearly $7 million in grants from the North Bay Fire Relief Fund to 56 nonprofits supporting the immediate needs of victims of last October’s North Bay fires. The grants will help local nonprofits provide a variety of services including financial assistance, food, housing and other vital services.

Toddler wins big

Staff from the Minnesota Credit Union Network visited Fulda Area CU, Fulda, Minn., to surprise the $5,000 annual prize winner, 2-year-old Amelia P. WINcentive Savings was developed by MnCUN to encourage healthy savings habits. When CU members deposit a set amount into their prize-linked savings account they are entered in monthly, quarterly and annual cash drawings.

Sikorsky CU, Stratford, Conn., opened a new branch in Trumbull, Conn. When two community banks left Trumbull, the CU’s management team saw the community had a need for a consumer-focused financial institution to serve the market.

Pasadena, Texas-based Gulf Coast Educators FCU celebrated the grand opening of its fifth branch in the greater Houston area. The new branch is located in the Westlake Marketplace shopping center, anchored by a Kroger Marketplace, and is the CU’s first location north of I-10.

Employees of GCS Credit Union, Granite City, Ill., raised $1,301.07 in one month to benefit Moms on a Mission. Created by Dawn Hosna, this non-profit seeks to collect and distribute goods such as clothing, food and household items to people in need.

Great Lakes supports local charities

Employees of Great Lakes CU, Bannockburn, Ill., voted to support two local charities: CASA Lake County and Midwest Shelter for Homeless Veterans. Over 12 months, GLCU employees and members collected clothing, toiletries and raised $10,000 for the two charities. Funds were raised through GLCU’s partnership with the Chicago Wolves’ Score for Charity program and a pledge to match $1 for each new member who joined the credit union.

Emerald City expansion

Tukwila, Wash.-based BECU opened the doors of a 7,700-square-foot Downtown Seattle Financial Center near Pike Place and Pine Street. The credit union plans to open an 1,800-square-foot financial center in the South Lake Union neighborhood in the third quarter of 2018.

Blanket drive

For the eighth consecutive year, Hanscom FCU, Hanscom AFB, Mass., participated in the Cooperative Credit Union Association’s annual blanket drive to benefit the Massachusetts Coalition for the Homeless. The CU collected 51 blankets for donation to area families in need.

Grand reopening

Carson City, Nev.-based Greater Nevada CU celebrated the grand reopening of its newly constructed Eagle Station branch with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and a $1,000 donation to the Holiday with a Hero program, sponsored by the Carson City School District, Sheriff's Office and Fire Department. The new, full-service branch, which replaces a 23-year-old branch that was part of the credit union’s administrative building, features advanced banking technology.
