'Catch a Firefly'

Firefly CU, Burnsville, Minn., spent the summer promoting its Catch a Firefly campaign. Kids collected coins by day and fireflies by night, thanks to Catch A Firefly Kits – a firefly catching net and a mason jar packed with tips on how to save money and catch fireflies – available for free at the CU’s branches. Nearly 4,000 children received a Catch a Firefly Kit.

Keeping first responders safe

IC FCU, Fitchburg, Mass., donated $1,000 to the Fitchburg Fire/EMS Equipment Fund to wash and dry gear to help keep first responders safe from cancer-causing chemicals.

Unitus hosts international CU visitors for eclipse

Portland, Ore.-based Unitus Community CU worked with the World Council of Credit Unions to host credit union employees from South and Central America to view the solar eclipse from the CU’s Salem, Ore., branch, which was located squarely within the zone of totality.

Pens, Paper and Promise at Member One

Member One FCU, Roanoke, Va., hosted an employee-led school supply drive called Pens, Paper and Promise. Member One employees from across the credit union’s footprint purchased school supplies for local students.

Desert Schools FCU helps kids and nonprofits

Employees of Phoenix-based Desert Schools FCU collected several hundred backpacks and school supplies for students K-8 at Balsz Elementary School. Separately, the CU hosted 25 non-profit agencies as part of its first-ever employee volunteer fair.

America First donates

America First CU, Riverdale, Utah, partnered with Cottages of Hope and the Ogden School District’s GearUp program to award four high school seniors with a $500 scholarship to the college of their choice. Separately, the CU awarded four youth soccer teams a soccer clinic with Major League Soccer’s Real Salt Lake. The credit union also participated in the Catholic Community Services of Northern Utah Backpack Bonanza, donating 107 backpacks plus school supplies.

Rock-a-thon

For the fourth consecutive year, Indianapolis-based Harvester CU held a Rock-a-thon, during which members rocked on rocking chairs and donated to the Cancer Association of Shelby County. This year’s event raised $1,035.

Cy Fair's classroom enhancements

Houston-based Cy-Fair FCU donated to six Cypress-Fairbanks ISD teachers to enhance their classrooms for local students as part of the credit union’s Extreme Classroom Makeover competition. Three teachers received $500 to enhance their respective elementary, middle or high school classrooms, and, for the first time, the CU also awarded $150 to three runners-up.

'Summer of Support'

Consumers CU, Waukegan, Ill., had another active summer of community support. This year's outreach extended to more than a dozen events, along with cash donations and hosting no-cost educational seminars that were open to the public.

Align CU, Lowell, Mass., sponsored the Lowell Student Police Academy for the seventh consecutive year. The Academy is a summer leadership program run by the Lowell Police Department’s School Resource Officers for students in grades 5 through 8.

Alaska USA donates to Phoenix Children's Hospital Foundation

The Alaska USA Foundation, the charitable arm of Alaska USA FCU, Anchorage, donated $5,000 to the Phoenix Children’s Hospital Foundation. The funds will support children whose families cannot afford the full cost of their medical care.
