Kenyan CU delegation

Through a partnership with the Minnesota CU Network, Falcon Heights, Minn.-based SPIRE Credit Union hosted 30 representatives from 12 credit unions in Kenya, where they are known as Savings and Credit Co-operatives, or SACCOs. Separately, sales of SPIRE’s fundraising T-shirts raised $2,000 for the American Cancer Society.

Care packages for the needy

The Member Service Center team for Lowell, Mass.-based Jeanne D’Arc CU, along with members from the Collections team, joined forces to assemble 50 care packages for clients of the Lowell Transitional Living Center. Each bag was filled with socks, lotion, hats, gloves, hand warmers, thermal blankets, toothbrushes, hot chocolate and more.

Nonprofit support

Suffolk FCU, Medford, N.Y., continued its support of nonprofits in its service area. The CU donated $500 to the local Alzheimer’s Association. Employees then participated in the Walk to End Alzheimer’s event, raising an additional $2,500. Separately, the CU made a $500 contribution to Town of Brookhaven to support its animal shelter.

CUs support the homeless

Northeast CU, Portsmouth, N.H., and Holy Rosary CU, Rochester, N.H., once again supported the Homeless Center for Strafford County, a seasonal emergency shelter for children and families located in Rochester, each donating $2,000 to provide food for families in need.

TruStone Financial FCU, Plymouth, Minn., donated $10,000 to nine local high schools in sponsorship of KARE 11’s Prep Sports Hot Highlights.

Dallas-based Advancial FCU donated several bags of crayons to Children’s Health Hospital in Dallas.

United Way donation

SECU – Maryland, Linthicum, Md., raised more than $37,500 for the United Way of Central Maryland through employee pledges and special fundraising events that were held during the CU’s annual campaign. SECU also made a $6,000 corporate gift to the United Way, which will go toward programs supporting financial literacy.

Nutmeg State expands

Rocky Hill, Conn.-based Nutmeg State Financial CU celebrated the grand opening of its newest location in the Stratford ShopRite. This is the credit union’s ninth branch and its first location in Fairfield County.

BECU's People Helping People Awards

BECU, Tukwila, Wash., honored the winners of its People Helping People Awards, recognizing BECU members and the non-profits they support with their time, talents and donations. At the ceremony, 18 non-profit organizations received awards ranging from $15,000 to $50,000 in 5 categories. Since 2013, BECU has donated $970,000 to local charities through the program.

Wearing jeans for those in need

IC Federal Credit Union, Fitchburg, Mass., said its Jeans for Charity program, now in its seventh year, has helped many area charitable organizations over the years. The employee created and funded program has donated in excess of $75,000, using the slogan, “We pay to wear jeans to help those in need.”
