Random Acts of Awesome: Credit Unions in the Community

Great Lakes
Staff from Great Lakes CU, Bannockburn, Ill., performed the latest random act of kindness for the community: visiting Ultimate Car Wash & Detailing in Antioch, Ill., and surprising 16 patrons with free washes compliments of GLCU.
Dakotas
The CU Association of the Dakotas held a golf tournament for charity at the Prairie West Golf Course. There were 60 golfers spread among 15 teams, and with CO-OP Financial Services matching the amount raised by the tournament, the total donation was $7,000. The funds will be shared by Sanford Childrens Hospitals in Fargo and Sioux Falls, and Rapid City Regional Hospital.
UVA
For the sixth time since 2009, the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) recognized Charlottesville, Va.-based UVA Community CUs success in supporting small businesses by naming it the Top Credit Union in the Richmond District for fiscal year 2015.
Alaska USA
In Anchorage, the Alaska USA Foundation donated $5,000 to the Great Alaska Council in support of Boy Scouts of America and $5,000 to the Matt Griffin YMCA of South King County.
Michigan Community
Michigan Community CU, Jackson, Mich., has been celebrating its 80th anniversary throughout 2016, including holding Prize Patrol Days once a month with a top prize of $500 for a lucky member.
Security Service
The Charitable Foundation for Security Service FCU, San Antonio, made a $2,500 donation to Big Brothers Big Sisters Pikes Peak for military mentoring programs, and $2,500 to the Childrens Fund of Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of Hidalgo County.
Engraving Printing
A member of Engraving and Printing FCU, Washington, D.C., submitted an essay to the CU Foundation of MD & DC and won 3 scholarships.
Affinity Plus
The Foundation for Affinity Plus FCU, St. Paul, Minn., issued a grant to support the Minnesota Council of Economic Educations annual Summer Institute for College Readiness. Representatives from the CU spoke to the 50 students on a wide range of topics, including personal finance, saving and investing.
Orange Countys
For the seventh consecutive year, Santa Ana, Calif.-based Orange Countys CU selected its Youth Scholarship winners. Six exceptional students who achieved academic excellence and dedicated themselves to giving back to their communities received $500 scholarships.
IC
At its annual meeting, IC FCU, Fitchburg, Mass., awarded five $1,000 scholarships to applicants from the surrounding community.
