Video contest

Franklin First FCU, Greenfield, Mass., awarded Mohawk Trail Regional School $1,000 for its participation in a “What Are Credit Unions?” video contest. Students created a 30-second video for Franklin First promoting the credit union, what CUs are and how they help the community.

St. Mary’s Bank, Manchester, N.H., was named the 2017 Best Credit Union by the NH Business Review’s annual BOB Awards, which honor the best of business in New Hampshire across more than 90 categories.

Employees of Oregonians CU, Milwaukie, Ore., participated in the Polar Plunge and raised $4,000 to benefit Special Olympics Oregon.

Education outreach

Teachers FCU, Hauppauge, N.Y., partnered with Stony Brook-based The Ward Melville Heritage Organization in support of its education outreach programs. TFCU gave $5,000 to underwrite six on-site and six distance learning programs for students attending schools within communities where the CU’s branches are located.

Dora Maxwell honors

SPIRE Credit Union, Falcon Heights, Minn., won the second place National Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility Community Service Award from CUNA. In one year, each of SPIRE’s 200-plus employees participated in 120 events and activities, giving 2,850 employee hours, donating $26,000 and changing countless lives.

Mill City CU, Minnetonka, Minn., awarded $1,000 each to non-profit Darby’s Dancers of Maple Grove and small business Be Creations Photography as part of the Making the Greater Good Even Greater giveback campaign. The two organizations garnered 4,495 total votes on the program’s Facebook contest page to win the quarterly award.

Volunteer Service Award

On behalf of America’s credit unions, the National Credit Union Foundation accepted the U.S. Gold President’s Volunteer Service Award presented by Junior Achievement USA for the 15,000-plus volunteer hours dedicated to Junior Achievement programs by America’s credit unions.

60th anniversary

In 1957, eight founding members of Ent CU each contributed $5 to create a credit union at Colorado Springs’ former Ent Air Force Base to provide check cashing services on base. Ent will be celebrating its 60th anniversary in many ways this year.
