The Defense Credit Union Council selected Purple Heart Homes as its 2017 charity organization. The DCUC will use a variety of fundraisers to benefit Purple Heart Homes, which helps older veterans and their caregivers with needed home modifications.

The third annual Marine CU Foundation Golf Outing raised more than $80,000 for charitable causes and financial literacy initiatives in the La Crosse, Wis., community. More than 140 golfers participated at the Golf Course at Cedar Creek Country Club in Onalaska, Wis.

'School Crashers'

Georgia United CU, Decatur, Ga., hosted its fourth annual School Crashers program, which offers Georgia schools the opportunity to apply for a facility makeover. Canby Lane Elementary School, built in 1960, was the top winner. A combination of CU staff, school faculty and professional contractors installed several significant improvement projects.

Coastal's big donation

Coastal CU, Raleigh, N.C., donated a 6,300-square-foot building in Rocky Mount, N.C., to NC Wesleyan College. The building will provide space for Wesleyan’s new Community Engagement office, and space to launch a new “school of financial education” curriculum. Coastal acquired the former branch building in its merger with Freedom CU in July 2016.

Sponsorships and donations

IBM Southeast Employees’ CU, Delray Beach, Fla., participated in and helped sponsor the “Junior Girls Day Out” Community Project. Separately, for every vehicle IBMSECU members purchased from Enterprise Car Sales and financed through IBMSECU, ECS donated $100 to the CU’s Foundation. IBMSECU matched donations, resulting in a total of $800 to kids in need.

Andrews FCU, Suitland, Md., lent several helping hands to Fairfax County’s Summer Lunch Bunch program. Staff from two branches delivered meals to multiple locations in Springfield, Va., to feed kids who do not attend summer school or summer camp.

Stuff that bus!

Employees of Educational Systems FCU, Greenbelt, Md., loaded a school bus with more than 2,000 donated backpacks to support Prince George's County Public School's Stuff-A-Bus event. The backpacks were filled with school supplies and were distributed to middle school students.

Financial Center First finds a few good causes to support

Indianapolis-based Financial Center First CU’s 19th annual charity golf event raised more than $28,000 to support local military and food pantry charities. Over the past 19 years, Financial Center’s annual golf outing has raised a total of $184,623. Separately, the CU donated $15,000 to the Indiana Military Veterans Hall of Fame to support the building of the organization’s memorial.
