Taking the plunge

Staffers from Vermont FCU, Burlington, Vt., were part of a record-breaking 1,269 participants who participated in the Penguin Plunge, jumping into 33-degree Lake Champlain to benefit the Special Olympics. They raised $538,487, topping last year’s record by $64,000.

More 'Casual for a Cause'

North Central Area CU, Houghton Lake, Mich., made a $2,434 donation to UPS Ed and Caren’s Charity, Coats for Kids, as part of the CU’s annual Casual for a Cause charity donation. Coats for Kids provides coats and needed clothing to children in need in the area.

First place

Scott CU, Edwardsville, Ill., won first place awards in all four categories of the Illinois CU League’s annual state-wide awards competition. In 2016, Scott sponsored 18 CU 4 Reality Financial Education Fairs, contributed approximately $430,000 and its employees volunteered 2,100 hours to a variety of local civic efforts.

Recognizing Classroom Heroes

San Diego County CU recognized Scott Borino as part of SDCCU Classroom Heroes. Borino is a second grade teacher at Vista Grande Elementary School. Winning teachers receive a $500 SDCCU Visa gift card, plus they are recognized as a Classroom Hero on a billboard in their community. Separately, SDCCU was recognized as one of San Diego’s Best and Brightest in Wellness by the National Association for Business Resources

Oregon expansion

Vancouver, Wash.-based Columbia CU, which has 12 branches throughout Clark County, Wash., has selected a location for its first Oregon branch: the diverse and vibrant Buckman neighborhood of SE Portland. The branch is scheduled to open later this year.

Sweet treats

New Hampshire credit unions, all members of the Cooperative CU Association, were treated to sweets and personal expressions of gratitude from Wish children and volunteers from Make-A-Wish New Hampshire, as 22 Wish children and their families visited 12 CUs to share highlights of their wishes.

A helping hand for inmates

Michigan Community CU, Jackson, Mich., participates in the Cooper Sate. Correctional Facility’s Employment Readiness Program, which prepares inmates for a successful re-entry into society by providing them information on finances, computer skills, resume writing and effective ways to help find employment upon release.
