Teaching HS seniors in the Twin Cities

Affinity Plus FCU, St. Paul, Minn., partnered with the Legacy I-3 Workforce Development Program to provide financial literacy to Minneapolis and St. Paul high school seniors. Separately, the CU’s 5-week Month of Giving finished with nearly $22,000 in contributions from members, staff and the public.

Texell gives back

In Temple, Texas, 24 team members from nearly every department of Texell CU packed sack lunches for “Feed My Sheep,” a local faith-based ministry for the homeless and needy. Texell CU also sent volunteers to the Ronald McDonald House and helped with blood drives.

SDCCU honors a classroom hero

San Diego County CU continued to honor local teachers through SDCCU Classroom Heroes, launched in partnership with iHeartMedia, Inc. San Diego. Lauren Shepherd of Arroyo Vista Charter School in Chula Vista was the latest to receive a $500 SDCCU Visa gift card, plus recognition as a Classroom Hero on a billboard in her community.

Ent 'Lives United'

Ent CU, Colorado Springs, Colo., concluded its 2016 United Way fundraising campaign, raising a record-breaking $216,691 from employee donations and employee-organized fundraising events. 2016 is the 10th consecutive year the employee campaign has raised more than $100,000 for the community.

Grand opening celebration

Michigan State University FCU, East Lansing, Mich., celebrated the grand opening of its Clarkston and Ortonville branches with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and reception. The new branches, which will develop relationships with Oakland County, were acquired as part of a merger with Clarkston Brandon Community CU.

Arbor Financial gets 'Casual for a Cause'

Arbor Financial CU, Kalamazoo, Mich., has a Caring Committee comprised of eight staff volunteers who coordinate the annual fundraising efforts among the credit union’s 120+ employees that benefit four handpicked local charities. Through “Casual For A Cause” jeans days, Arbor Financial staff raised a total of $3,750 in 2016 for four local organizations.

Three members of Connex CU, North Haven, Conn., were winners in the national Save to Win program. This group, which featured two $25 monthly winners, was highlighted by quarterly-winner Mukai Johnson, who received a check for $500.

CMN fundraisers

Employees of Hughes FCU, Tucson, Ariz., held two fundraisers, sold candy bars at branches throughout 2016, and participated in an annual radiothon, generating $15,021 in donations to Credit Union for Kids, benefitting Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals and TMC for Children.

Teaching kids about CUs

Several representatives from Cardinal CU, Richmond Heights, Ohio, were invited to visit the prestigious School of Innovation in Willoughby, Ohio. They spoke to 250 third, fourth and fifth grade students about how to join a credit union, how and why to save money, and what qualifications one needs to work at a not-for-profit CU.
