Capital One's acquisition of Discover made it the largest credit-card issuer and the bank holding company with the largest credit-card loan portfolio in the U.S., based on numbers as of the end of 2024. The $35 billion deal closed on May 18, more than a year since its announcement.
"I think that Discover brings us a growth platform, both on the network side and with respect to their card franchise, that allows us to preserve the best of what they do, leverage a lot of Capital One's capabilities that we bring and build something really special," Capital One Chairman and CEO Richard Fairbank said on the company's first-quarter earnings call on April 22.
