John F. Burger has been promoted to president and chief executive officer of Six Rivers National Bank in Eureka, Calif.

He succeeds Tim Cochrane, who is joining the California Bankers Association.

William Kay continues as chairman of Six Rivers, which was founded in 1989 and has assets of over $70 million.

Mr. Burger, a Eureka native, brings 36 years of banking experience to his new role, including three as a strategic planner and chief of administration at Six Rivers.

He has been top executive at a number of financial institutions. He was president of Humboldt Federal Savings of Eureka when it merged with Home Federal of San Diego in 1981. He also served a stint, in 1982, as president of Fidelity Savings in San Francisco, in a management team representing the Federal Home Loan Bank Board.

Mr. Burger retired from Home Federal in 1990, having led its branch networks in the Northern California and then in the central part of the state. He came out of retirement in 1992 to join Six Rivers as vice president in charge of marketing, long-term strategic planning, and stockholder relations.
