A Hire, a New Unit at National City

CLEVELAND — National City Corp. has hired a new corporate marketing department head and started a branding unit.

The $91 billion-asset banking company named Karin Stone senior vice president and director of corporate marketing. Ms. Stone, who started Monday, has previously worked at American Express Co. and Ford Motor Credit Co. Before joining National City she was vice president of Walker Digital, an Internet development company in California.

She succeeded Mary H. Griffith, who was assigned to lead the internal brand management unit.

Ms. Stone is responsible for business-line marketing, Web marketing, corporate advertising, and creative services. She reports to A. Joseph Parker, executive vice president and head of retail sales and distribution.

Ms. Stone “is a strategic thinker, and will bring a high degree of energy and experience to our marketing effort,” David Daberko, chairman and chief executive officer of National City, said in a prepared statement. “We expect that she will quickly have a positive impact on our marketing and branding initiatives.”

At American Express, Ms. Stone led marketing efforts for the American Express Financial Direct brokerage, including the creation of its electronic distribution channel and the launch of its Web site. At Ford she helped market an online consumer auto-lending unit.

In February, $91 billion-asset National City promoted William E. MacDonald 3d, a 33-year veteran of the company, to vice chairman. He succeeded Vincent A. DiGirolamo, who retired.
