NEW YORK -- A survey by management consultant Towers Perrin found that senior bank managers and outside directors would do their banking at Banc One Corp., given a choice.
The survey also found that Banc One was considered "the foremost financial institution in terms of human resource practices" and that Merrill Lynch Co. was the most respected nonbank competitor.
The study surveyed bank executives and outside directors from U.S. commercial banks and thrifts with assets of $500 million or more. The findings were based on the responses of 355 participants.
Banc One was also chosen as the "U.S. financial institution which does a superior job of attracting, motivating, and retaining the right people."
Wachovia Corp. ranked second in the category, and Nations-Bank came in third.
