International Bancshares Corp. in Laredo, Texas, said Friday that first-quarter earnings rose 5% from a year earlier, in part because of lower credit costs.

The $12.1 billion-asset company posted earnings of $30.2 million, compared with $28.8 million a year earlier. The loan-loss provision fell 44% from a year earlier, to $4.1 million.
