Big merger in Detroit wins federal approval.

DETROIT -- The Federal Reserve has approved the merger of Comerica Inc. and Manufacturers National Corp., a Manufacturers spokesman said.

The U.S. Justice Department now has 30 days to review the merger's competitive impact. The Michigan companies do not expected any objections on anti-trust grounds.

Michael Maurer, a Manufacturers vice president of public relations, said officials of both banks expect to begin consolidating operations in the summer.
