Golden 1 Credit Union of Sacramento is using multifactor authentication software from Arcot Systems Inc. of Sunnyvale, Calif.
Arcot announced the agreement Monday.
With Arcot's software, consumers who normally use one computer to bank online can enroll in the system and then authenticate themselves with just a username and password. If they use a different machine, they must answer a security question to authenticate themselves when they log in.
Golden 1 also is using a "personal assurance message" that each user composes. The credit union shows the message to members when they log in to assure them that the credit union's Web site is legitimate. An impostor site set up by a phisher would not include the message.
Lisa Swanson, Golden 1's vice president for e-commerce, said in the vendor's press release that the credit union selected Arcot because of its "strong, multilayered transactional security."
