Capital Briefs: Appraiser Directory Available on Internet

Banks can now use the World Wide Web to verify whether a real estate appraiser is certified or licensed.

A Web site recently introduced by the Federal Financial Institutions Examination Council offers searchable information on licensed appraisers. Appraiser data include their state of certification, address and phone number, disciplinary actions, and license expiration date.

The Web site will help banks, thrifts, and credit unions comply with a provision of a 1989 law that requires them to get appraisals for real estate-related financial transactions above $250,000.
