Capital Briefs: D'Amato Prodded to Preserve Thrift Charter

A coalition of 59 thrifts and 17 trade groups on Friday urged Senate Banking Committee Chairman Alfonse M. D'Amato to retain the unitary thrift charter in his financial reform bill.

"The unitary thrift holding company structure does not need reform," the Thrift Charter Coalition said. "It is indeed a model for reform."

Members of the group include Household International Inc., Principal Financial Group, and America's Community Bankers.
