Capital Briefs: House Panel to Review Electronic Payments

The House Banking Committee will hold a hearing in early November to study electronic payment systems operated by the Federal Reserve Board and private firms.

"Because electronic payments are rapidly developing, it is incumbent upon the Congress to follow those developments carefully to ensure the public interest is served," Committee Chairman Jim Leach said.

Also at the hearing, the committee will release a General Accounting Office survey of the electronic payment products offered by 350 banks and thrifts.
