Capital Briefs: Seminar for Thrifts on Escaping SAIF Burden

With efforts to capitalize the Savings Association Insurance Fund stalled in Congress, America's Community Bankers will hold three seminars to show thrifts how to ease the burden of high deposit insurance premiums.

The one-day sessions will cover how institutions can shift deposits from the thrift fund to the Bank Insurance Fund or reduce reliance on insured deposits.

"We will continue to press for a legislative solution to the ongoing premium disparity," said ACB spokesman Robert Schmermund. "However, it's incumbent upon us to inform and educate our members to the business options they may have absent congressional action."

The seminars, open only to ACB members, will be held May 30 in Los Angeles, June 3 in Washington, and June 6 in Chicago.
