Bankruptcy protections for farmers would be made permanent under legislation approved Thursday by the Senate Judiciary Committee.

The protections, found in Chapter 12 of the bankruptcy code, allow farmers to enter bankruptcy reorganization without their creditors' approval. It also makes it harder for lenders to foreclose on farms held as collateral for other loans.
