Card Briefs: Gtech to Service ATMs In Eastern Europe

Gtech Corp., the leader in gaming technology and a growing force in transaction processing through its electronic benefits transfer business, said it will be an indirect contractor to the Euronet automated teller machine network.

Euronet, an independent network company based in Hungary and serving Eastern Europe, will rely on DataTrans, a Gtech affiliate, for data communications services in Poland.

Within two years of completion of a pilot, DataTrans would install at least 500 satellite communications devices to service the machines.

"Gtech brought sophisticated network communications, including satellite technology, to Poland in 1991 with the implementation of the country's online lottery," said William Y. O'Connor, the company's president and chief executive officer. Through DataTrans, Gtech can "offer additional transaction services for consumers while strengthening the (country's) communications infrastructure."
