Card Briefs: Hawaiian Bank Using System from Verifone

Bank of Hawaii has become one of the first users of a high-speed card transaction system from Verifone Inc.

Verifone said it is working with GTE Hawaiian Tel and the bank to hook up merchants to the digital technology known as ISDN - integrated services digital network.

The Redwood City, Calif.-based transaction automation company recently announced it is marketing the system, Digital Xpress, jointly with Vital Processing Services, the joint merchant processing venture of Total System Services Inc. and Visa U.S.A.

ISDN allows credit card transactions to be completed in six to 10 seconds, compared with 12 to 18 seconds for credit authorizations and 18 to 25 seconds for debit authorizations using older analog technology, Verifone said.
