PORTLAND, Maine - Peoples Heritage Bank has announced plans to expand into four communities where it does has no offices, to enhance its telephone banking system, and to enlarge its network of automated teller machines.

The lead bank of Peoples Heritage Financial Group Inc., a $2.8 billion- asset holding company, plans to double its ATM network to more than 60 locations throughout Maine by the end of this year. Many of the new ATMs are being deployed in supermarkets.
