Card Briefs: Smart-Card Pay Phones At Electronics Show

LAS VEGAS - Northern Telecom demonstrated its Millennium pay telephones, which use smart-card technology, at the International Winter Consumer Electronics Show.

The Canadian-owned telecommunications company has supplied the Millennium system to U S West for the United States' first trial of prepaid phone cards using chip technology, currently under way in the Seattle area.

In Canada, Bell Canada's Telecarte LaPuce is being used on Millennium terminals at Universite Laval, McGill University, Palais des Congres de Montreal, and the Casino de Montreal. More than 65,000 Millennium pay phones have been deployed in North America.
