Card Briefs: Verifact Putting PIN Modules in Gas Pumps

TORONTO - International Verifact Inc. signed a contract with Tokheim Corp. to supply secure PIN entry modules for pay-at-the-pump systems at gasoline stations.

Tokheim, which is based in Fort Wayne, Ind., is one of the largest suppliers of gasoline pumps in North America. Its customers include Shell, Exxon, Diamond Shamrock, and Canadian Tire Gas Bar stations.

Close to 25% of the installed gas pumps in the United States already have pay-at-the-pump features for credit cards. Adding the IVI module will make these locations ready for debit cards as well.

Separately, Verifact's U.S. division said it agreed to provide a point of sale check reader/printer/encoder to Dassault Automatismes et Telecommunications of Plaisir, France.

The initial deliveries, to begin in 1996, will be 5,000 units. The French automation company said it expects eventually to sell 10,000 units in France and may broaden the offering to other European countries.
