Card Briefs: Visa, Consumer Group Extend Debit Program

Visa U.S.A. and the National Consumers League have expanded a consumer education effort.

Their Debit Education Partnership, begun in fall 1997, was meant to explain how debit cards can complement credit. It has distributed 235,000 brochures.

A recent survey commissioned by Visa showed that one out of five consumers was not fully aware of the differences between debit and credit cards. That has led the organizations to "a more targeted educational approach" describing "the full functions of debit cards."
