Remote capture is taking a deeper dive into customer convenience, with a possible play into reducing ATM fraud costs for institutions. Fiserv’s CheckFree unit is now offering through banks a new remote capture product giving consumers the ability to scan and deposit check images from any generic scanner. The new solution, Remote Deposit Capture for Consumers, is being marketed as a convenience and security play. CheckFree also touts the ability to lower fraud costs for banks, which deal with “empty-envelope” ATM deposit scams that account for half of all ATM fraud (per a 2006 study by Diebold).
The remote capture solution integrates with a bank’s online banking platform, extending the use of a customer’s existing authentication procedures. CheckFree says the new product has image and character recognition capabilities that will be able to read check amounts and account information accurately, while automatically cropping and verifying check images.
