Clarification: 04/17/98 issue

An April 17 article, "Sallie Mae Says It Won't give $1B Backup for Student Loans" (page 2), may have left a false impression about a plan for the federal government to step in if banks stopped making government- guaranteed loans to students. The Education Department has proposed making up to $4 billion available through the states, which would would administer the loans.
