Coke Machines to Take Chip Cards

Coca-Cola Bottling Company United Inc. of Birmingham, Ala., plans to equip its vending machines to accept MasterCard Inc. contactless payment cards.

The Coca-Cola bottler, the third-largest in the United States, covers an area from Atlanta to Baton Rouge, La.

MasterCard, of Purchase, N.Y., announced the deal this week. It has been promoting contactless vending machines since last summer in conjunction with USA Technologies Inc. of Malvern, Pa., which makes a reader that accepts contactless and magnetic-stripe cards, as well as currency, and uses wireless technology to authorize card payments.
