Commonwealth Names Executive

Commonwealth Bank, Norristown, Pa., a subsidiary of Commonwealth Bancorp, has promoted vice president James E. Schwartz to lead its traditional banking department.

He is responsible cash management, sales, and general administration of Commonwealth Bank's 40 traditional branches.

Mr. Schwartz, a former Meridian Bank vice president and branch manager, was regional vice president for Berks and Lebanon counties, responsible for 12 former Meridian Bank branches. He joined Commonwealth in June 1996, when CoreStates Financial Corp. sold them after buying Meridian Bancorp.

Commonwealth Bancorp has $2.3 billion of assets.
