Crapo Named GOP's Chief Deputy Whip

WASHINGTON — Sen. Michael Crapo, a senior member of the Senate Banking Committee, has been named Republicans' chief deputy whip in the 113th Congress.

The Idaho Republican will be responsible for helping to mobilizing party votes on important issues and communicating strategy to GOP colleagues under Senate Minority Whip Senator John Cornyn, R-Texas. He's also widely expected to be named ranking member of the banking panel in coming weeks, taking over for Sen. Richard Shelby, R-Ala., whose term limit on the position has expired.

"Our nation faces critical deadlines for getting our fiscal house in order," Crapo said in a press release Tuesday. "Congress must focus on the real drivers of our debt and deficits by enacting real, enforceable spending cuts, structurally reforming our entitlement programs to prevent impending insolvency, and enacting pro-growth tax reform that will reduce tax rates for American families and businesses, and make the tax code more simple, efficient and competitive."

The announcement comes just days after Crapo pled guilty to a misdemeanor drunken driving charge in Virginia.
