WASHINGTON - Sen. Alfonse M. D'Amato, the ranking Republican on the Senate Banking Committee, called for hearings into the Arkansas savings and loan scandal that has embroiled President Clinton.

The New York legislator's counterpart in the House, Rep. Jim Leach, R-Iowa, urged similar hearing, but was rebuffed by Rep. Henry B. Gonzalez, D-Tex., chairman of the House Banking Committee.

The Department of Justice is investigating whether Madison Guaranty Savings and Loan used depositor funds to aid then-Gov. Clinton's reelection campaign.
