Derivatives business up 31.5% in 3d quarter.

WASHINGTON -- The volume of business done by U.S. commercial banks in off-balance-sheet derivatives grew 31.5% in the third quarter, compared with the same quarter of 1993, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. said.

The gross volume of business totaled $15.77 trillion, up from $11.99 trillion in the 1993 third quarter. In the second quarter of this year, the amount was $15.32 trillion, the FDIC said.
