EBay Inc.'s payments unit, PayPal Inc. continued to increase its payment volume and user base in the fourth quarter, eBay reported Wednesday.
PayPal's net revenue rose 22% to $971 million from the same period last year. Its active account total rose 16.5% to 94.4 million.
PayPal's net total payments volume increased 25.7% in the quarter to $26.9 billion. Its Bill Me Later system, which provides instant credit for online purchases, increased payments volume by 48.9% to $460 million.
PayPal's merchant services net total payment volume rose 36.4% to $16.5 billion. The unit includes PayPal-accepting merchants, active PayPal accounts and eBay's share of Mobile Express Checkout, a mobile payments initiative. Mobile Express Checkout offers consumers the same payment options as the online version of PayPal.
Overall, eBay's net revenue rose 4.2% to $2.5 billion. Its net income fell 59% to $559 million. The drop was attributed to its 2009 sale of Skype.
