Amalgamated Bank of Chicago has hired Robert J. Majdecki as its chief investment officer and a senior vice president.

Mr. Majdecki came to the $670 million-asset unit of Amalgamated Investments Co. from the $2.1 billion-asset Oak Brook Bank in Illinois. As a vice president, he managed Oak Brook's investment portfolio and the fixed-income portfolios of its treasury department.

Before joining Oak Brook he had been an assistant vice president of the treasury group at the Federal Home Loan Bank of Chicago, where he managed short- and long-term asset trading.

He has 33 years of banking and investment experience.


First Banks Inc. of St. Louis has named Steven F. Schepman its chief financial officer and a senior vice president.

Mr. Schepman, who has been a director of the company since last year, had been the senior vice president of private banking, wealth management, and trust services at its $8.8 billion-asset First Bank since 2000.

He joined the bank a year earlier.

Before that he had been an accountant at KPMG LLP in San Francisco. Earlier he had been a consultant at Price Waterhouse LLP, now PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP.

At First Banks, he succeeded Allen H. Blake, who remains the company's president and chief executive officer.


SOUTHEASTAlliance Bank of Chantilly, Va., has hired Michael C. O'Grady as its director of commercial banking and a senior vice president.

Mr. O'Grady was a senior vice president and a team leader of the government contracting lending unit at SunTrust Bank of Atlanta. He has 30 years of banking experience.

At the $691 million-asset unit of Alliance Bankshares Corp. he will report to Thomas A. Young Jr., the president and chief executive officer of the parent company and the bank.


City Holding Co. of Charleston, W.Va., has named Edward M. Payne 3d its chairman.

Mr. Payne is the president of seven land management companies and is of counsel at the Beckley law firm File, Payne, Scherer & File PLLC.

He has been a director of City Holding, which owns the $2.5 billion-asset City National Bank of West Virginia, since 1998, when it bought Horizon Bancorp Inc. of Beckley, of which he had also been a director.
