United Bank of Vienna, Va., has made Craige L. Smith Jr. its chief operating officer.

Mr. Smith, who will remain an executive vice president, was the operations director at the $2.9 billion-asset bank, which he joined in 2000.

He has 32 years of commercial banking experience.

United Bank is one of two banks by the same name owned by the $6.6 billion-asset United Bankshares Inc. of Charleston, W.Va. (The other one is in Parkersburg, W.Va.)


WESTUCBH Holdings Inc. of San Francisco has hired John Lui as the chief executive officer and chief investment officer of its newly organized UCB Asset Management Inc., which caters to high-net-worth customers.

Mr. Lui was the managing director and the chief investment officer for small-cap and midcap growth strategies at BNY Asset Management, the institutional money management business of Bank of New York Co. Inc.

Before that he had been a vice president and a senior portfolio manager at Barclays Global Asset Management. He led asset management efforts for Asia and the Middle East for the Barclays Bank PLC business.

Earlier he had been a vice president and a group head at Bank of New York's international personal asset management division, where he managed $1.5 billion for high-net-worth individual and institutional investors in Asia, the Middle East, and Latin America.
