Executive Changes: Former Bessmer CEO Will Lead Chevy Chase

Chevy Chase Bank's institutional investment arm, ASB Capital Management, has named a former chief executive officer of Bessemer Trust Cos. as chairman and chief executive officer.

Mr. Whitmore, 66, will serve in a nonexecutive role at the Washington-based investment advisory firm. He is also a director of the $10 billion-asset Maryland savings bank.

He was president and CEO of New York-based Bessemer Trust Cos. and the parent Bessemer Group Inc. from 1975 to 1998. Before that he was a senior vice president and trust officer at American Security and Trust Co.

ASB Capital Management also promoted Barnard A. Buscemi to chief investment officer.

Mr. Buscemi, 44, remains managing director and head of portfolio management and client services. He joined the company in 1995.


NEW ENGLAND

Mellon Private Asset Management in Boston has promoted Jan S. Adams and Richard S. Noone Jr. to first vice presidencies.Ms. Adams is an endowment and foundation specialist for the national sales group. She joined the company in 1994 and has 26 years of experience working with nonprofit organizations.

Mr. Noone is a senior sales officer. He joined the company in 1994 and has 15 years of financial experience.

Mellon Private Asset Management is a subsidiary of Mellon Financial Corp.


People's Heritage Bank in Portland, Maine, has promoted Denise Desgrosseilliers and Nicky Burke to assistant vice president.Ms. Desgrosseilliers oversees consumer and real estate records and collateral units, as well as mortgage loan sales and contract changes in the loan operations department. She joined the bank in 1988 and has also worked as a supervisor in the payoff department and as an assistant manager in the Visa/MasterCard department. She has 14 years of banking experience.

Ms. Burke manages securities accounting in the investment department. She joined the bank last year. Earlier she worked eight years at Unum Providence Investments in Portland. She has nine years of banking experience.


MIDDLE ATLANTIC

CIBC World Markets in New York has hired William R. Schmitt as an executive director in the equity research group.Mr. Schmitt will cover gaming and lodging. He came from Wasserstein Parella Securities, where he had covered the gaming industry since 1998. Earlier he was an analyst at Gerard Klauer Mattison in New York. Before that he covered the cable, cellular, gaming, and leisure industries at Moran & Associates in New York.


SOUTHEAST

FleetBoston Financial Corp. has moved John W. McGowan to the top job at the Stuart, Fla., office of Fleet Trust and Investment Services Co.He was also named a senior vice president and regional manager in FleetBoston's private clients group.

Mr. McGowan, 58, came from the affiliated Bank of Boston Florida, which he joined six years ago. Fleet Financial Group bought its parent, BankBoston Corp., last October and renamed itself FleetBoston.

Mr. McGowan was a vice president and senior trust and estate relationship manager for Bank of Boston Florida in Boca Raton. Earlier he worked 11 years as president of NBD Trust Company of Florida, a unit of a Bank One Corp. predecessor.

Before that he worked for another FleetBoston predecessor, Shawmut Bank in Boston, as a vice president of business development. Fleet Financial bought Shawmut in 1995.


WEST

Bankers Trust Private Banking, a unit of Deutsche Bank, has hired Leslie D. Boland and Diana Liu as vice presidents.Ms. Boland will be a portfolio manager in the Los Angeles office. She was a portfolio manager in the Los Angeles office of Skudder Kemper Investments Inc., where she had worked for 16 years.

Ms. Liu will be a relationship manager in the San Francisco office.

She came from the Hong Kong branch of Citibank Private Bank, where she was a vice president. Earlier she was an associate at Mellon Capital Management Corp.
