Fed Approves Chinese Branch

The Federal Reserve on Friday approved an application by China's Bank of Communications Co. to open a branch in San Francisco.

The $599 billion-asset Shanghai company plans to use the location for wholesale deposit-taking, lending, trade finance and other banking services, according to the Fed.

The Fed's approval also recognized efforts by the Chinese government since 2003 to increase oversight of money laundering.
