Joseph E. Hasten, a former vice chairman at U.S. Bancorp, died Tuesday after a brief illness. He was 59.
Hasten began his banking career in commercial lending at American National Bank and Trust Co. in Chicago before moving on to executive positions at First Chicago Bank and Standard Chartered Bank, according to his obituary from Donnellan Family Funeral Services.
In 1995, Hasten joined Mercantile Bancorp as president of its bank in St. Louis, and as head of corporate banking. In 1999 he became vice chairman for wholesale banking at Firstar Bank when Firstar took over Mercantile and later became vice chairman of corporate banking at U.S. Bancorp after it merged with Firstar. At U.S. Bancorp, he led specialized lending, wholesale product development and sales, and also served as market manager of the company's operations in St. Louis, according to his obituary.
Hasten returned to Chicago and in 2007 became president and chief executive of ShoreBank, a community development bank, before retiring in 2009. ShoreBank failed in 2010.
