McLEAN, Va. -- The Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corp. said it purchased a record $20.2 billion in mortgages in October, breaking its previous monthly record of $18.1 billion in April.

Freddie Mac said it has purchased $18.1 billion in mortgages in the first 10 months of the year.

The figure for the 10 months surpasses the previous full-year record of $104 billion in 1986 and last year's total of $100 billion.
