The Boston unit entered the retail long-term-care insurance market in 1987 and began selling group policies a year later. Today it is the largest U.S. provider of employer-sponsored long-term-care insurance, according to Limra International Inc.

In the first quarter Hancock's individual long-term-care policy sales rose 55%. Last year it sold more than 86,000 such policies, more than any other carrier, Limra said.

Hancock, which announced the milestone Thursday, had $370 billion of assets under management as of March 31.
