In Brief: A Former Clinton Official Joins Calvert

Calvert Group Ltd., a Bethesda, Md., company that manages a family of socially responsible mutual funds, has hired a former Clinton administration official as a senior vice president for social research and policy.

Bennett Freeman, whose hiring was announced Monday, was the head of the global corporate responsibility practice at Burson-Marsteller, a strategic communications and public affairs unit of Young & Rubicam Inc. Before that he had been the deputy assistant secretary of state for democracy, human rights, and labor in the Clinton administration.

In his new role, Mr. Freeman will manage the social analysis functions and maintains relationships with Calvert's portfolio managers.

He will also lead the development of the firm's positions on social issues and articulate those positions in public forums, and he will identify emerging trends and opportunities in social research and shareholder advocacy.

Julie Gorte, who was promoted to vice president and chief social investment strategist in August, had led the social analysis team.

Calvert's 32 funds had over $11.9 billion of assets under management as of Dec. 31.
