In Brief: Advanta Veteran Joins Associates First Capital

David A. Brooks, a retail banking veteran who recently spent a stormy two months with Advanta Corp., has joined Associates First Capital Corp. of Dallas as executive vice president for business development.

Mr. Brooks will oversee product development, cross-selling initiatives, fee-based services, and corporate quality programs-which will draw on his four decades in consumer banking, credit card, and senior staff roles.

He will report to Harold D. Marshall, president and chief operating officer of the Ford Motor Co. finance affiliate, which has $51 billion of managed assets and has been an active acquirer of card and other consumer loan portfolios.

Mr. Brooks, 57, "will help us expand our presence in the competitive financial services industry," said Associates chairman and chief executive officer Keith W. Hughes.

Mr. Hughes was a retail executive from 1976 to 1981 at Crocker National Corp. in San Francisco, where Mr. Brooks was a vice chairman.

Mr. Brooks worked earlier in his career at First National Bank of Chicago. After Wells Fargo & Co. acquired Crocker in 1986, he ran the western U.S. businesses of Citicorp.

After three years as executive vice president of Visa U.S.A., Mr. Brooks became Advanta's president last January. By mid-March, the card-lending specialist disclosed it was losing money-$19.8 million when its first- quarter statement came out-and Mr. Brooks had resigned.
