In Brief: Alliance, Franklin Grew in Aug.; Janus Fell

Alliance Capital Management reported Friday that a preliminary estimate of assets under management at the end of August showed a gain of $6 billion, to $479 billion, from July 31; Janus Capital Group reported a continuation of asset erosion; and Franklin Resources said it gained $5.7 billion of managed assets in the month.

The Denver fund company Janus said assets under management fell 0.9% last month, to $127.8 billion from $129 billion at July 31.

Franklin, a San Mateo, Calif., company, reported that its preliminary estimate of assets under management rose to $353.1 billion for Aug. 31, from $347.4 billion the preceding month and $297.3 billion a year earlier. Its 12-month growth was $55.8 billion; Alliance Capital's growth from Aug. 31, 2003, was $45 billion.
