PayPal Inc., the online person-to-person payment processing unit of eBay Inc. of San Jose, Calif., said it has nearly 35 million accounts in Europe, more than a quarter of its global total of 133 million.

Last year PayPal processed $8.4 billion of payments in Europe, the unit said Wednesday.
PayPal, long the dominant payment mechanism for online auctions, has been trying to broaden customers' use of its technology. Last month it said it planned to link its capabilities this year to eBay's Skype Internet telephone software, in a bid for the international remittance market.
