NEW YORK American Express Co. paid chairman and chief executive officer Harvey Golub cash salary and bonus of $4.5 million last year, up 22% from 1999, excluding options and other incentives.
Mr. Golubs salary was unchanged, at $1 million, but his bonus rose 33%, to $3.2 million. In addition, he got compensation, mostly for travel expenses, of $292,865, according to a proxy filed Friday with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
On top of that, Mr. Golub received long-term incentive pay totaling $2.6 million, $958,481 of retirement benefits, and options valued at about $17.3 million. He got no restricted stock last year. In 1999, he was awarded more than $1 million of restricted shares.
