In Brief: Another Metavante Bill Payment Service

Metavante Corp., the technology unit of Marshall & Ilsley Corp. of Milwaukee, has started offering a service that lets people with its prepaid cards pay bills online.

The Metavante Prepaid Bill Payment service links two existing Metavante payments services, the unit said Monday.

Frank D'Angelo, Metavante's president and chief operating officer, said in an interview that two banks, which he would not name, tested the service for six months.

Metavante Prepaid Bill Payment is designed to help banks reach the unbanked, he said. People with prepaid cards can log in to a bank-branded, Metavante-hosted Web site to make and schedule a payment.

The service uses a good funds model, deducting money from the card account before executing a transaction, and allows payment to anyone. Users also can initiate payments through an automated telephone system.

Metavante plans to offer the service as a freestanding one unrelated to its other core processing or payment offerings, Mr. D'Angelo said.
