In Brief: Atlanta Thrift to Test Bill Payment Software

Tucker Federal Bank plans to test electronic bill presentment and payment software from Brinkman Technologies Inc. The Tucker, Ga., thrift would be the first financial institution to pilot Brinkman's NextBill software.

Using NextBill, merchants will send statements directly to customers via e-mail. Customers can click on a "Pay Bill" icon, and resulting payments are processed through the automated clearing house system. The thrift will charge billers on a per-transaction basis.

"Until now, banks have been presented no option other than the third- party model, in which they were offered minimal opportunity to capture revenue and have no control over the bill payment process," said Mark Brinkman, president of Brinkman Technologies. "With NextBill, banks can use existing in-house technology to recapture those fees and take control over the bill payment process."
