Most banks that offer health savings accounts expect enrollments to double or triple this year, according to preliminary results of a survey by Information Strategies Inc.
Average set-up fees and account balances showed improvement in the 2005 yearend survey of more than 100 banks, the company said on Wednesday. Banks in the survey had opened 1.1 million accounts by late last year, and the average set-up fee fell below $25, from $48 a year earlier.
The average account balance exceeded $1,500, the company said, though just an $1,100 average had been projected as recently as November. Family HSAs outnumbered individual accounts by three to one, and accounts at banks in the survey totaled 1.1 million, covering 2.4 million people.
