In Brief: Brokat Buying Two U.S. Software Firms

STUTTGART, GERMANY - The German software vendor Brokat Infosystems AG has signed definitive agreements to buy two American companies for a total of $831.7 million.

Brokat would pay $560.5 million for Blaze Software Inc. of San Jose, Calif., and $271.2 million for privately held Gemstone Systems Inc. of Beaverton, Ore.

The purchases, expected to close in September, would increase Brokat's work force to about 1,100. The German company intends to use Blaze's main product, the Blaze Advisor Solutions Suite, to add customer relationship management features to its own Twister middleware platform, which 2,000 companies use. The Blaze suite helps organizations create personalized content.

Similarly, GemStone's software would enhance Twister's electronic commerce capabilities.

The Blaze and GemStone products would still be produced under their current names.
